A sculpture series that utilizes a closed loop air system for finding gestures. Inspired by the refraction of light through dust and other particles in our atmosphere to create an analog color gradient that is constantly in flux.
Imagining the fallout of dust (or other particles) interacting with the color of a sunset, I wanted to create a kinetic sculpture that recreates the same physical phenomenon.
I started by using a ventilation fan to push colored styrofoam balls between 2 mm and 6 mm in diameter with a ventilation blower to create both a gradient and continuously changing shapes as the balls diffuse and interact with a spotlight shining from above. The latest version simplified the flow design to and improve the reliability of 3D printing, unified the color pallete, and allowed for future modifications to be more easily applied.
