Life is about embracing futility, repeating an action or moving through space and time without having a known outcome. This is what draws me towards chaotic systems we create or observe.
I move mostly between static and kinetic sculptures inspired by a fascination with futile actions informed by my background in the Navy and mechanical engineering. I work to create systems of sculptures that create unpredictable forms by changing simple inputs of information or energy.
One underlying theme that reappears in my work is the idea that total understanding is unreachable. Embracing uncertainty should be the default, and planning has a finite working limit. Chaotic system behavior exemplifies this realization. We exist and manipulate the world without fully understanding the consequences: Accepting that total understanding of chaos is impossible. When we focus on predicting outcomes or potential outcomes, existence and control is unattainable. By embracing uncertainty, acting towards futility in particular—we are able to move on and make meaning with life.
