Statement
Joshua Prince is a multidisciplinary artist based in Washington D.C., working in painting, sculpture, drawing, and print. His work centers around sculptures inspired by scientific phenomena and his surrealist abstract drawings. He explores hidden, unexplainable shapes, using lines and negative space to depict forms that feel natural yet defy conventional understanding. He incorporates a diverse range of materials in his work, including custom 3D-printed parts, plexiglass, steel, concrete, and wood.
He organizes a multidisciplinary practice as an open investigation into discovering material limits and exploring forms that transcend multiple dimensions. His creative process begins with his sketchbook drawings and doodles, serving as the formal foundation to his work. He places a deliberate emphasis on exposed hardware elements—such as valves, pipes, bolts, and washers—integrating them as aesthetic components in his sculptures.
Joshua’s visual style blends gestural and minimal abstraction, emphasizing the natural colors and patinas of his materials with minimal added color. His sculptures are characterized by doodle-like forms, a monumental presence, and a resemblance to data visualization. While his work is grounded in scientific phenomena, he seeks to find forms and movements that generate phenomenological responses across a broad audience; helping us connect spiritually to each other and the universe.
