Born in 1992 in Minneapolis, United States, Joshua studied at Tufts University in Medford, MA from 2010-2014. From 2014 through 2022, Joshua served as a submarine officer in the United States Navy before enrolling in 2023 at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts in Philadelphia, PA. Since starting his MFA in 2024 at the University of Maryland, College Park, the artist has lived and worked between Philadelphia and Washington D.C. appearing in numerous group exhibits in both cities. Recently, the artist finished his first public art commission at the University of Maryland titled, “Not So Random”. The work showcases his interests in combining machinery with art utilizing a kinetic sculpture that continuously draws three-dimensional doodles in a transparent box.

Joshua’s practice reflects an underlying fascination with forces in our world. His recent work, “Refracted Flow” highlights the potential to create engaging works of art by questioning the nature of physical forces. Embracing his engineering background, the artist seeks out abstract shapes informed by piping and wiring diagrams, his time spent living abroad, and visualizations that help us comprehend phenomena unimaginable to human perception. The artist is focused on the same questions that perplex scientists and engineers but with a different purpose: Instead of seeking answers, Joshua’s practice looks for new questions, new relationships, and new forms of tension that drive our fascination and awe with the universe.
